How to Search Becker County Criminal Records
Minnesota Court Records Online (MCRO) at publicaccess.courts.state.mn.us is the free starting point for Becker County criminal case searches. Enter a name or case number to see matching records from the district court. The system shows charges, hearing entries, and case status. Records filed after July 1, 2015 are available online at no charge. Cases before that date require an in-person or written request at the Becker County Courthouse.
For older records or certified copies, visit the Becker County Courthouse at 915 Lake Ave., Detroit Lakes, MN 56501. The Court Administrator's office handles walk-in requests on business days. Certified copies cost more than plain document copies. MPA Remote at mncourts.gov is an older system that shows case index data but does not let you view documents. MCRO is the better choice for document-level searches.
For a statewide conviction record, the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension runs an $8 public search at bca.dps.mn.gov. This covers felony, gross misdemeanor, and misdemeanor convictions from the past 15 years, as defined under Minn. Stat. § 13.87. Becker County convictions will appear in those results alongside any other Minnesota convictions. Arrests without a conviction do not show up in the BCA public search. The Minnesota DOC Offender Locator at coms.doc.state.mn.us/PublicViewer shows people serving state sentences or on state supervision, including those from Becker County cases.
Note: Active investigations are confidential under state law while ongoing. Once a case closes, the related data generally becomes public.
Becker County Court Records Access
Becker County District Court handles all criminal cases filed in the county. The courthouse is at 915 Lake Ave., Detroit Lakes, MN 56501. Use mncourts.gov/Find-Courts to check current hours and contact details. MCRO covers public documents filed after July 1, 2015, including criminal case types, registers of action, hearing schedules, and judgment information. Court-authored documents from as far back as July 1, 2005 are also searchable for free.
You do not need an account for basic name searches in MCRO. Results appear as a list of matching parties and cases. Select a case to see the register of actions, which shows every event and document filed in that matter. Documents are downloadable as PDFs. For cases not yet in MCRO, you can request records at the courthouse by providing the name, case number, or a date range. Processing times vary depending on volume and whether the records are active or archived.
Case types that are not accessible through MCRO include juvenile delinquency cases, domestic abuse matters, harassment orders, and sealed or expunged records. These remain restricted from remote access regardless of the filing date.
Minnesota Criminal Background Checks
The BCA's Criminal History Search is the main tool for a Becker County conviction check. Access it online through bca.dps.mn.gov for $8 per name. The BCA central office is at 1430 Maryland Avenue East, St. Paul, MN 55106, phone 651-793-2400. The search returns felony, gross misdemeanor, and misdemeanor convictions from the past 15 years statewide. Minn. Stat. § 13.87 sets the rules for what's public versus private in the criminal history system. The BCA is authorized as the central repository under Minn. Stat. § 299C.46.
What does not appear in the BCA public search: arrest records, juvenile records, out-of-state records, federal convictions, records older than 15 years from sentence discharge, and anything that has been expunged or sealed. The search uses name and date of birth as identifiers, so results depend on the accuracy of those inputs. If you believe BCA records about you are inaccurate, you have the right to contest them under Minn. Stat. § 13.04.
Expungement in Becker County
Becker County residents can seek expungement of their criminal records through the District Court in Detroit Lakes. Minnesota law provides two main paths. The first is automatic expungement under Minn. Stat. § 609A.015, which applies to cases that ended without a conviction. The BCA identifies eligible records and processes those without a petition. The second path is a petition-based expungement under Minn. Stat. § 609A.03 for those who were convicted of qualifying offenses and have waited the required time period.
A petition filed in Becker County must notify all agencies that hold related records. That includes the BCA, the Becker County Sheriff's Office, and any other agency that handled the case. Each agency has the right to respond or object before the judge rules. If granted, expungement seals the record from public view. It does not delete it from law enforcement databases. The record remains accessible to criminal justice agencies. LawHelpMN at lawhelpmn.org has free guides for people navigating Minnesota expungement on their own.
Note: Predatory offender registration under Minn. Stat. § 243.166 is separate from expungement and continues regardless of other record-sealing orders.
Sex Offender Registry for Becker County
Minnesota's predatory offender registry is maintained by the BCA under Minn. Stat. § 243.166. Anyone convicted of qualifying sex offenses must register their address and other identifying information. Becker County residents subject to this law register through the Sheriff's Office or their corrections agent. Registration violations are a felony under state law, with up to five years in prison for noncompliance.
Community notification is governed by Minn. Stat. § 244.052, which created a three-tier risk level system. Level I offenders have low assessed risk and their information stays within law enforcement. Level II offenders have moderate risk and notification reaches schools, daycares, and similar facilities. Level III offenders have high assessed risk and their information is publicly posted online. You can search the public registry through the Department of Public Safety at dps.mn.gov.
Risk levels are set by an end-of-confinement review committee 90 days before an offender's release. Offenders assessed at Level II or III can request administrative review of that assignment. Level III offender addresses in Becker County are publicly listed and searchable by the general public.
