Meeker County Overview
Meeker County Sheriff and Criminal Records
The Meeker County Sheriff's Office is the primary law enforcement agency for unincorporated areas of the county and handles jail operations for the county. The Sheriff works closely with the Litchfield Police Department and other local agencies. Arrests made by any law enforcement agency in Meeker County are processed through the county jail, and booking data becomes part of the county's public arrest record system.
Under Minn. Stat. § 13.82, arrest data maintained by the Meeker County Sheriff's Office is public government data. This includes the time and date of an arrest, the charges filed, the name and age of the person arrested, and the custody status. Law enforcement must make this information available to anyone who asks. The Meeker County Courthouse is located at 325 North Sibley Avenue in Litchfield.
For current jail roster information, the Minnesota Department of Corrections Public Viewer at coms.doc.state.mn.us shows people serving state sentences or on state supervision, which complements local Meeker County jail data. The Sheriff's Office can be reached directly at the Litchfield courthouse for questions about current custody status or local arrest records.
Note: Active criminal investigations by the Meeker County Sheriff are confidential while the investigation is open. Records become public once a case closes or a charging decision is made.

Statewide Criminal Background Checks
Minnesota's Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) maintains the state's central repository for criminal history data. Any conviction in Meeker County that results in a sentence gets reported to the BCA, which stores it in a statewide database. The public can search this database through the Criminal History Search (CHS) portal at chs.state.mn.us for $8 per search.
The BCA's public record shows conviction data for up to 15 years following the discharge of a sentence, as set by Minn. Stat. § 13.87. This covers felonies, gross misdemeanors, and most misdemeanor convictions. Arrest records, pending charges, and cases that ended without conviction are not included in the public search results. To get a more complete picture, combine the BCA search with a direct MCRO search for Meeker County court cases.
The BCA's main office is located in St. Paul, and searches can be done online anytime or in person during business hours. You need a full name and date of birth to run a search. The BCA is part of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, which you can learn more about at bca.dps.mn.gov.

Expungement of Criminal Records
People with Meeker County criminal records may qualify to have those records sealed through Minnesota's expungement process. There are two main paths: automatic expungement under Minn. Stat. § 609A.015, and petition-based expungement under Minn. Stat. § 609A.03.
Automatic expungement, which became law in 2023, applies to cases where all charges were dismissed, where a diversion program was completed, or where a waiting period has passed since the discharge of a sentence. The BCA identifies eligible records and seals them without the person needing to file anything. Waiting periods vary by offense type: two years for petty misdemeanors and most misdemeanors, three years for gross misdemeanors, and four to five years for qualifying felonies. The court is required to notify defendants at sentencing if they may be eligible for automatic expungement later.
For records that do not qualify for automatic expungement, a person can file a petition at the 8th Judicial District Court in Meeker County. The petition must include detailed information about the offense, the person's address history, and evidence of rehabilitation. After filing, the petition is served on the prosecutor and all relevant agencies, including the BCA and any law enforcement agencies that hold records. A hearing is scheduled no sooner than 60 days after service. The court then weighs the benefit to the petitioner against any public safety concerns. If granted, the record is sealed but not destroyed. Law enforcement agencies can still access sealed records for investigation purposes.
Note: Expungement of a Meeker County criminal record does not remove registration requirements for predatory offenders. Those obligations continue regardless of any court-ordered sealing of other records.
Predatory Offender Registry
Minnesota's predatory offender registration system applies to people convicted of certain serious offenses, including criminal sexual conduct, kidnapping, and related crimes. Anyone required to register must do so under Minn. Stat. § 243.166, which covers registration procedures, required information, and verification rules. This requirement applies to people living in Meeker County who were convicted here or elsewhere.
Under Minn. Stat. § 244.052, each registered offender is assigned a risk level before release from confinement. Level I offenders pose low risk, and their information stays within law enforcement. Level II offenders pose moderate risk, and schools and similar facilities may be notified. Level III offenders pose high risk, and their information is posted publicly on the Department of Corrections website. Anyone living in Meeker County can check whether a Level III offender resides nearby using the DOC's public viewer at coms.doc.state.mn.us.
Registered offenders must verify their information in person each year during their birth month. Address changes must be reported within five days. Failure to comply with registration requirements is a felony under Minnesota law.
